Ralph Henssen tells me it is from a later model 80A. The lacquered main tuning slide on this otherwise silver plated instrument is not standard, it is a replacement of the original which was damaged. I am told the 80A has a duo bore or "expanding bore" main tuning slide: the top half is a #2 (0.468") bore, the bottom half is a #2½ (0.484") bore. Another minor difference is the fact that on the older model the second slide is at a right angle to the instrument, while on this newer version it angles back towards the player. The older type 80A also had top spring valves with adjustable spring strength, this version has bottom spring valves. This 80A being a later version doesn't have the mechanism that automatically adjusts all slides when the main tuning slide is pulled out to A. Notice the micro-tuning mechanism or "opera glass" just forward of the first valve. Overall, this is a great vintage cornet from Conn!Ĭheck out a clip of Trent playing an 80A (not this one for sale) below: There is some valve noise, and some dents along the bell and on some slide crooks (see pictures). It has been fully chem cleaned here at the shop. There are some signs of red rot in the leadpipe, but we tested it for leaks and found none. It has decent compression with thicker valve oil. Vernon horns provided that the condition of the instrument warrants consideration. In time, many very knowledgeable Bachophiles will covet these VERY early Elkhart horns as much or MORE than the Mt. Considering your horns serial number being within a couple of thousand within the 1965 and 30,000 start of production, I’d say that you are the owner of a horn that was made with an extraordinary level of pride or care.Ĭongratulations. My guess is that yours was produced late ’65 or sometime ’66, but not 1964. The factory shop card indicated that it’s production date is April 15, 1965. I own a new old stock Bach 37 cornet, absolute pristine. Paul, your 37 was manufacturer’s after 1965.
